The warrior woman's watermelon
Iron Age. The Senghenydd Crate
Several items within the Crate relate to the so-called "Warrior Woman", a collection of human remains found on a burial site near the Llyn Cerrig Bach ironworks in Anglesey.
The skeleton and several burial items were recovered and publicly exhibited in the museum since 1979.
Notes within the Crate indicate several additional items were also found at the burial site. These include several weapons, ornamental toe rings and a large watermelon (pictured). The latter is of particular significance as the only known example of Iron Age fruit.
The reasons why these items were not included within the original National Museum Cardiff exhibition remain unclear.
